Stigma in Australia is REAL!

We recently missed out on an Australian Government Grant, and while rejections are not uncommon in our industry, this one hit us hard for a specific reason.

To provide some context, our application sought funding to enhance transparency throughout the GMP process for our local (Aus, NZ, Asian) and European operators. At present, there is a significant lack of transparency within the supply chain, leaving both operators and end users in my home country and country of origin without access to vital information. Unfortunately, such access is currently limited to those who can afford it.

I’m sharing the reasons behind our grant denial because I strongly believe that stigma played a role in the decision-making process, especially when considering other successful grantees in the past.

We were informed that our market in Australia wasn’t substantial enough to warrant funding.

However, what many decision-makers fail to grasp in the realm of cannabis reform in both Australia and NZ is that there are countless individuals in desperate need of pain relief and medical assistance that doesn’t harm their organs or exacerbate their conditions (as opioids often do). Regrettably, these decisions continue to be made by individuals who hold onto the outdated belief that cannabis is solely for “stoners,” disregarding the undeniable medicinal benefits it offers to those who have ever experienced chronic pain or had to endure incurable diseases or cancer.

Essentially, the government’s justification for denying funding is rooted in the misconception that cannabis is exclusively for recreational use. My recent trip to NZ to support my younger sister during her cancer journey exposed me to the stark reality of this situation. Witnessing the lack of affordable access available to those grappling with debilitating health problems left an indelible mark on me.

It is crucial that we advocate for greater clarity and understanding in the cannabis reform landscape. By shedding light on the immense need for reliable information and affordable access to medicinal cannabis, we can foster meaningful change and alleviate the suffering of countless individuals.

When an investor or funder raises concerns about the cannabis industry, claiming it lacks professionalism or that it promotes drug use, it’s important to reflect on the origin of such thoughts. Essentially, by dismissing the struggles of those who are suffering and suggesting they should simply endure their circumstances, you are refusing to challenge your own biases and beliefs that led you to this position.

I shared a video of myself working out because it plays a vital role in maintaining my mental and physical well-being. It serves as a powerful reminder of my inner strength and resilience, providing me with the necessary energy to support my loved ones during these challenging and heartbreaking moments they are going through. Additionally, exercise acts as a potent stress reliever, allowing me to navigate the constant uphill battle of running a business, particularly in my own country, with renewed focus and determination.
